As we ring in 2012, help us in our mission to provide facial reconstructions to individuals struggling to eat, drink, communicate, and smile with ease due to Noma. Noma is a disease caused by lack of food and sanitary water, causing life-altering facial disfigurements in small children. Over 40,000 new cases of Noma are found each year, with a 90% mortality rate. Those that survive, are left with uncomfortable disfigurements that often leave them ostracised. Help us help the survivors by donating to provide surgical aid. (To donate click the DONATE tab at the top right portion of this page.)

Medical Team Departure January 12, 2012
YES! OUR MEDICAL TEAM IS ONCE AGAIN DEPARTING TO ETHIOPIA!
As world hunger becomes a larger issue, more and more victims of Noma are being found. Approximately 40 Noma victims have been identified for potential facial reconstructions on this trip, and it is our hope that we will be able to provide them. Help us raise awareness by passing this email along to your contacts and assist in funding patient recovery and future medical assistance. (To donate click the donate tab at the top right portion of this page.)
For more information on Noma and the medical aid provided to Noma patients, please visit www.facingafrica.org. We work in the US to provide assistance to Facing Africa in Ethiopia.

CALL TO ACTION:
As most of you know, the story of our charity has been chosen as the subject matter of a documentary that is being created by students at Orange Coast College. In our efforts to share our complete story, our founder and three film crew members have been invited to join, observe, and capture the facial transformations performed by surgeons during Facing Africa’s trip to Addis Ababa this October. WE JUST NEED THE PLANE TICKETS (and a box of protein bars to suffice as meals while we’re there).
HERE ARE TWO WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

GIVE UP COFFEE FOR ONE DAY
We are asking our friends to give up coffee (or tea, or soda, or any other extra expense) for one day (or week if you feel compelled), and donate that money to this mission. JUST PRESS THE DONATE TAB AT THE TOP OF OUR BLOG PAGE.

SPREAD THE WORD
If you are unable to donate, help spread the word about our mission. The more donors we have, the less value each donation will need to be. Forward our message to friends, make a Facebook post with a link to our site, and/or mention our efforts to friends, family, and or colleagues at work.

Founder Sara Beth Farney has been chosen as the subject matter for a student documentary based on social change. Orange Coast College student, Rebekah Pantel and her film team have been issued a scholarship to complete the film, and will document the story of CreateACTivity this summer.
DONATE TO HELP US CREATE A BETTER QUALITY FILM
Although a scholarship has been issued to document our efforts to help Noma victims, the more funding we have, the better the quality documentary we can create. With a high quality film to tell our story, the more exposure we can receive through film festivals and screenings. This exposure ultimately leads to more donations, which leads to more facial reconstructions for Noma victims. To donate towards our film, please click the following link: [DONATE HERE]
All donations are federal and state tax exempt to the greatest extend allowed by law.

L'Oreal London Citizen Day Pledges
On June 30th, 650 of the staff at L’Oreal London participated in a Citizen’s Day event that raised awareness about Noma and our counterpart organization, Facing Africa . The event gave the L’Oreal London staff the opportunity to make a pledge as to how they would do something to help the cause. Staff members pledged anything from a donation of their time to participating in a 10k race in London in the name of the cause.

BEFORE

AFTER
The pictures seen above are the before and after pictures of Mistekima, a little girl that was operated on in March of 2010 by Facing Africa to reconstruct the life altering effects that she suffers from due to Noma. As seen in the pictures, Mistekima is now able to blow bubbles, which involves facial movements she has never been capable of performing. Last week, Facing Africa returned to Ethiopia to perform more facial operations. During last weeks trip, Mistekima received her second facial reconstruction, moving bone from her skull to underneath eye to provide support and protection to the eye area. A third operation is scheduled for next year, where her nose and lips will be reconstructed. The aid and assistance of the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and administrative team of Facing Africa has allowed Mistekima to lead a more comfortable and functional life. To donate towards the reconstructions of Noma victims much like Mistekima’s please click on the donation tab in the upper right corner of our page.

Our founder Sara Beth Farney will be speaking at the Medical Tourism Congress event on the 22nd through the 24th of September at the Los Angeles Hyatt. The event typically has about 2,000 attendees from around the globe, an abundance of networking opportunities, and a very diverse group of speakers touching on various topics related to Medical and Spa Tourism. The topic to be discussed by Sara Beth will be a look into hybrid relationships of for-profit and non-profit organizations, cause marketing strategies for the medical and med spa industries, the psychological effects of cause marketing on consumers and company employees, and how to pick a cause that best benefits the altruistic needs of a company or medical practice.
